Aerosol medications

Currently three different types of inhaled medication are being commonly used with the AeroMask equine system.

Steroids

Steroids are potent anti-inflammatories and modulate the excessive immune response leading to your dog's symptoms of bronchial disease. They are generally used on a daily or twice daily basis to prevent airway hypersensititvity and reduce the stimulus to cough.

Bronchodilators

Bronchodilators cause the airways deep down in the lungs to dilate and so relieve the airway narrowing which happens with chronic bronchial disease. They can either be used twice daily as prophylaxis or more commonly in an acute crisis to relieve severe bronchospasm.

Mast Cell/Platelet Activating factor inhibitors

The exact mechanism of these drugs such as sodium cromoglycate is unknown. They work by stabilising the cells and mechanisms responsible for responding to allergens in the lungs, thus making them less reactive. It is usually given by nebulization as a daily dose over four to five days and the effects can last few several weeks

Breatheazy does not endorse the use of any particular inhaled product.
All owners should consult with their veterinarian as to which medication is most suitable for their horse.
